Broome

Established in 1883, the coastal settlement of Broome (pop. 14,000) is located on the western edge of the Kimberley region. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, Broome is one of the most remote settlements in Australia – the town is closer to Timor-Leste than Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Broome’s early prosperity was built on pearling; indentured labour was brought from Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines and China. Today, Broome continues to harvest pearls, but is also a major tourism destination, with adventure tours to Roebuck Bay, the Dampier Peninsula and Rowley Shoals Marine Park. Its most famous attraction is the 22km-long Cable Beach. Apart from it’s rich European and Asian history, the town of Broome is situated on Rubibi land,  the land of the Yawuru Traditional Custodians.

Notre Dame's Broome Campus is home to the Nulungu Research Institute. The Institute's expertise includes native title, governance, climate change, sustainable futures, organisational landscapes, linguistics, alternative food production systems and carbon farming. Nulungu's core research themes are Education, Health and Wellbeing, and Caring for Country.

• Venue hire

  There are a range of facilities available to hire for conferences, meetings and special events at the Broome Campus.

  The multipurpose conference room, along with meeting and tutorial rooms are all equipped with audio visual and presentation facilities. The facilities are ideal for special events, awards nights, board meetings and conferences.

• Accommodation

  The Village includes a hostel which can accommodate 28 people and nine self-contained houses; each house contains five single bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and study areas. Guests enjoy shared kitchens, lounges and dining areas. Village amenities include free Wi-Fi, a communal kitchen, BBQ facilities, pool tables, a basketball court, television room, laundry and off-street parking.  Guests must be aged 18 and over. Students from other tertiary institutions and those attending training, workshops, meetings or retreats are also welcome to apply for campus accommodation.

  An Accommodation Coordinator oversees the day to day running of the accommodation facilities. The Coordinator and Campus Services staff offer support and guidance to students to assist them enjoy their stay at the Broome Campus. Living on campus, the students have ready access to the campus library and computer facilities.

• Out and about

  As Broome is a major tourist centre you’ll find a good range of cafes, restaurants and pubs to choose from – plus popular local attractions such as Cable Beach, Sun Pictures, Matso’s Broome Brewery, Pearl Luggers Museum and the Japanese Cemetery.

  Highlights include the Mango Festival, held every November, and the Staircase to the Moon outdoor food festival from March to October. Whale watching operates from June to September each year.

• Transport

  The Campus is located on 88 Guy Street and is surrounded by natural savannah and tropical gardens. This Campus is only a 10-minute walk from the main Broome shopping centre, and 20 minutes to the town centre.

  A town bus links most of the major attractions in Broome, including Chinatown, downtown, the university and Cable Beach. The service operates from 7.10am to 7.10pm daily. Taxis are plentiful, with taxi ranks at the airport, Broome Boulevard and the Paspaley Plaza.
